Nature of request
The petitioners seek the authority of the present parliament to compel the duchess of Clarence to pay her late husband's debts. Chichele, Fauntleroy, Botreaux, Paling, Glanton, Boning and Broker are Alfeld's executors, Piringden is Turnell's executor, and Davy is Denton's executor. They all state that Thomas, late duke of Clarence, while on his deathbed was indebted to them in great sums of bullion worth £909 11s 4d. Consider that the duke was killed in the wars and service of the king's father, and knowing that the duke gained great amounts of bullion and wealth, he granted part to the late king from his special grace and good will to his brother. The discharge of the duke's soul was granted to the duchess, who was granted all the said bullion and wealth considering that she would pay her husband's debts. Nevertheless, she retains the said bullion contrary to the late king's wishes, and will pay nothing to the petitioners, to their damage and destruction and that of the souls of the duke and their [testators] without your aid.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] By the Bishop of Bath, 20 May.
