Nature of request
The petitioner asks the duke and his consort to arbitrate a dispute between himself and certain merchants over a consignment of wine. He states that recently a ship loaded with various wines (by tidal misfortune) beached on lands appurtenant to the abbey, which since time without memory has not been covered in water, having right of wreck of the sea and everything appurtenant. The goods were saved by the petitioner with the help of many people and he salvaged thirty-nine tuns and one pipe, which he brought to the monastery, of which eight tuns were empty, two mixed with seawater and two delivered to the ship's master, and thus there remained twenty-seven tuns and one pipe that the petitioner still holds despite complaints from the wine-merchants. He wishes that both parties appoint two persons to decide all matters and assemble sufficient surety together to abide the said award and ordinance, on which each party should release their actions.
