Description
Petitioners
John del Chaumbre (Chamber) and other tenants of lands once belonging to John de Denton of Newcastle.
Name(s)
Chaumbre (Chamber), John
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The petitioners complain that because Denton alleged that three plots in the town were royal waste and not part of the town an enquiry ad quod dampnum was held by Denton in his capacity as mayor, which found the lands to be worth 20s per year. These were granted by royal patent in 1337-8 to Denton and his heirs at the rent of 20s to be paid through the mayor and bailiffs who were distrained for this sum until Mayor Duxfield showed by bill in parliament in 1351-2 that the lands rightly belonged to the commons of Newcastle. Then an enquiry in 1352-3 found this rebuttal to be true and the mayor and bailiffs were discharged, but now the petitioners are distrained for the same arrears although the Denton grant and rent has necessarily been made void. They seek a writ to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer to find these matters on record that they be discharged of the said 20s each year forever, through the above judgements etc.
