Nature of request
1) The petitioners ask for confirmation of usages and general grants made to them by King Edward III and King Richard II. They ask the king to consider their great oppression [suffered] for a long time and the detention of goods intended for passage to England, and on this grant for their good governance all the liberties and franchises granted by King Richard in 1392-3, and install each year on 25 March, one mayor, two constables, clerks, sergeants, etc., such as are necessary for the staple.2) They also seek special provision for the king's officers and deputies, all type of attachments, arrests and executions concerning the staple, and in the town, haven and anchorage of Calais according to the usages and general grants made by King Edward III and King Richard II.3) They seek an expansion of their liberty such that no petition should be allowed for anyone in the staple; because recently persons have withdrawn outside England and come to Calais to disturb ... allow this petition, for a great disease to some soldiers and many commons.4) They also seek governance of strange goods such as woad, and other merchandise in the staple.5) They also seek the right to forfeited goods and chattels in the town and anchorage of Calais from the people of the staple, and debts due from the same etc.
