Description
Petitioners
Margaret Cary, who was the wife of John Cary, knight.
Name(s)
Cary, Margaret
Addressees
King and Parliament.
Nature of request
The petitioner seeks continued possession of various lands and tenements as her jointure, notwithstanding a grant made [to another] by the king's letters patent. She states that in the parliament held at Westminster in year eleven of the late king, John Cary her husband was condemned to death and all his lands, tenements, goods and chattels forfeit to the king. By the same parliament it was established that the entailed heirs in reversion or remainder, or farms of his inheritance or jointures etc., made before a certain time limit in the statute, should not be barred or excluded from their rights. On the strength of enfeoffments made long before the time limit in the statute, the petitioner is now in peaceful possession of various lands and tenements from the said John, namely the manors of Cockington and Haliwill, and certain lands and tenements in Northlew, Holsworthy and Highampton, as her jointure with her late husband, which enfeoffments she is ready to show the king or his council. Now by his letters patent the king has granted [to another] the aforesaid properties, by reason of which she is about to lose rightful possession.

Note
CPR 1391-6, p. 657, and internal evidence in the petition, indicate that this must date from after the reign of Richard II, though no precise context has been established and it is therefore notionally assigned to the first quarter of the fifteenth century.
