Description

de Chastelay, William

Nature of request
The petitioner seeks restoration as keeper of the River Foss (or an equivalent office), inasmuch as he wishes the matter put before the good and loyal men of the city of York. He shows that the dead king granted the petitioner (in lieu of a pension), for twenty-two years of loyal service with him in the Scottish wars and elsewhere, the keeping of the River Foss, near York, to hold for his lifetime by letters patent enrolled in chancery. Then Despenser came and wrongfully ousted the petitioner without reason.1)

Note
No firm context has been established within the patent rolls, but on internal evidence the petition clearly dates to early in the reign of Edward III.
