Reference
SC 8/100/4967
Date
[c. 1317]
Description
Petitioners
The Burgesses of Cambridge.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The petitioners seek an enquiry into the behaviour of the chancellor and university of Cambridge, who have, by colour of an article of their charter from King Henry, wrongly prosecuted a lay clerk for trespass, bound him in a certain sum and imprisoned him in danger of his life without regard and due process, and they have done the same to various laity of the commonality of the town.
Nature of endorsement
Shown in the parliament at Westminster in year ten, and no answer was made to them.
Places mentioned
Cambridge, [Cambridgeshire].
People mentioned
Henry [III], King of England
Chancellor of Cambridge University.
Note
Notes on the guard suggest that the 'year ten' referred to in the endorsement is 10 Edward III, but no parliament was held at Westminster in that year and, on the basis of the hand, the petition would seem to be earlier: in is dated here tentatively to the time of the parliament held in April 1317 (10 Edward II)
