Nature of request
The petitioners appeal to the king as their defender concerning certain grievances and for the deliverance from imprisonment of their servants and to defend them in Rome. They show that custody of vacant churches are of their advowson of right and custom from time without memory, but now Langton asserts that custody of these churches belongs to him by reason of his archdeaconry. Corour, Wyvelesbergh, Appelgar, Nyton, Sprot, Godefrey, Burgeys, Bertone, Lamb, Fuller, Sprot, Wyvelesbergh, Belham, and Roming, their servants sent to collect the issues of the vacant churches have been excommunicated by the archdeacon, and at the suggestion of the archbishop the sheriff has imprisoned them in the king's gaol pending an appeal to the court of Rome.
