Description

de Chilton, John

Nature of request
The petitioner seeks pardon for an amercement of £10, because he has lost all his goods (worth 2000 marks) at the taking of the town of Berwick and has lived wretchedly in Northumberland ever since. He states that he bought a burgage in Berwick when the king's father held the town, from Moyses, whose forefathers were seised of the same in the time of King Alexander, and the petitioner was seised until the taking and betrayal of the town to Bruce. And now, since the town has been surrendered to the king, the petitioner brought an assize of novel disseisin against Foubour, tenant of the burgage, and others, where it was found that the petitioner was disseised as he complained and recovered his seisin. Because it was found in the same assize that some named in the writ were unconnected with the disseisin the petitioner was amerced £10 by the custom of the land for his false claim.
