Reference
SC 8/99/4946
Date
[c. 1350-c. 1400]
Description
Petitioners
Men of Cambridge.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The men of Cambridge state that lately, with the King's permission, various men of religion and colleges have appropriated and purchased lands and tenements in the town, amounting to a third of the town, greatly to their harm and that of their farm, as has been found by various inquisitions taken on this and returned in Chancery. They request a remedy, that their farm might be reduced by the amount of the losses established by the inquisitions; and that in future no such appropriation might take place, as the town has been greatly destroyed by arson.
Nature of endorsement
The council of the Queen, who has the farm of the said town, is to be summoned before the Chancellor and others of the King's council; and justice is further to be done.
Places mentioned
Cambridge, [Cambridgeshire].
Note
Internal evidence suggests that the petition may belong to the period after the Black Death when considerable amounts of property in Cambridge were acquired by the colleges; the reference to the queen holding the farm of the town of Cambridge means that, within the second half of the fourteenth century, the likely periods for the petition are 1350-1358 (Queen Isabella), 1360-69 (Queen Philippa) or 1382-94 (Queen Anne).
