Date
[1316]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Clare.
Name(s)
de Clare, Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Richard de Clare states that John de Hothum and the King's council in Ireland sent him to Leinster to defend those parts, where he has no lands or rents to support himself and his men, nor, while he remains there, can he have much profit from his own lands. He asks that while he is there he might have the issues of two thirds of the lands and franchise which belonged to the Earl of Gloucester in those parts, to aid his support and his costs.
Nature of endorsement
Because it is attested that the King can scarcely have any profit from those lands during this war, and the said Richard has no lands in those parts, as is contained in the petition, it seems, if it please the King, that it is good that he should have the issues at his pleasure during the war.It pleases the King.
Places mentioned
Leinster, Ireland.
People mentioned
John de Hothum
[Gilbert de Clare], Earl of Gloucester.
Note
CPR 1313-7 p.459 is dated 16 May 1316, and is clearly in response to this petition.
