SC 8/99/4940
Date

Description
Petitioners
Community of people who have recovered damages in King's Bench against trespassers against the King's peace.
Addressees
Council.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that when trespassers against the King's peace and convicted by inquisition, and then compelled to make fine at the King's suit, the Marshal is ordered to keep them under guard until they have made fine or paid their damages, the Marshal allows them to go free, for a certain sum, for a year, or two years, or more, so that few people receive their damages by such a suit. They request a remedy for such imprisonment, or that the justices might be ordered to punish them with imprisonments that will be upheld.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be sent to the justices to provide a remedy for the contents of the petition, insofar as it pertains to them, and likewise another writ to the Earl Marshal to have the marshals under him in King's Bench punished, so that the King does not impose his hand.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? 1319' without further explanation. This date seems entirely compatible with the hand.
