Nature of request
The Dean and chapter of Chichester cathedral, sub-collectors of the tenths granted to the King in the diocese of Chichester state that they are being charged by the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer for the tenths from certain parsons and vicars, whose names do not appear in the rolls of the pope or of the Bishops of Lincoln and Winchester, formerly chief collectors of this tenth, because of their poverty and inability to pay. They ask for a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, that if the former chief collectors can inform them that the names were removed from the rolls for this reason, they might be discharged of this sum.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered by writ that if they can establish, from inspection of the rolls of the principal collectors of the tenths granted to the king, and likewise of the tenths imposed upon the clergy of England, that the names of the rectors and vicars contained in the schedule sewn to this petition, and also the names of their benefices, have been extracted and removed from the said rolls because of the poverty of their benefices, as is contained in the petition, and that the aforesaid Dean and chapter remain charged at the Exchequer with 101s. 4d. of the individual tenths granted to the King because of the aforesaid benefices, then the aforesaid names are to be extracted from the rolls of assessment of benefices in the diocese of Chichester, situated in the Exchequer, and the dean and chapter are to be discharged and acquitted of the aforesaid money.
