Description
Petitioners
Prior of Coventry.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Prior of Coventry
Nature of request
The Prior of Coventry states that William Erneys, Escheator of Warwickshire, out of malevolence towards the Prior and convent, and in agreement with other malevolent people of Coventry, accused the Prior of acquiring lands and tenements in Coventry after the statute and without permission from the King: and he forged false inquisitions on this matter, and took the tenements into the King's hand. The Prior was able to prove that these accusations were false, and the King ordered a new inquisition, and that his hand be removed: but the Escheator put the same people on the new inquisition, with the result that the Prior and his house are on the point of being disinherited. he requests a new and full inquisition, to be held in the presence of one or two of the most loyal knights or sergeants of the country as well as of the Escheator, and with a new jury.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be sent to the Escheator containing the effect of this petition, that he is to take with him Roger la Zouche and John de Peyto the elder and to hold a new inquisition with people who are not suspected, in the presence of the said Prior or of his attorney; and he is to return the inquisition in Chancery.
