Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/99/4925
Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
Matthew de Crauthorne (Crawthorne).
Name(s)
de Crauthorne (Crawthorne), Matthew
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Matthew de Crauthorne states that the King gave him the keeping of the lands and tenements formerly of Hugh Daudeleye the younger in the county of Devon, on 1 June in his fourteenth year [1321], but that by no writ he could purchase could he enter into that office in the time of Robert Bendyn, Nicholas de Cheyne, or John Inge, Sheriffs of Devon, until 5 days before last Easter. And in the meantime people came on behalf of Hugh Daudeleye and levied some of the issues of the lands for him, and some people came on their own authority and appropriated part of the issues, and made gifts and sales of wood and corn, to the King's great harm. Matthew, who is answerable to the King for the issues of these lands from the date of his commission, requests a writ to the Sheriff to hold an inquiry into these losses, and to certify the King's court about this, so that a remedy can be provided and justice done for the King.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be sent to the Sheriff according to the form of the petition.
Places mentioned
Devon.
People mentioned
Hugh Daudeleye (Audley) the younger
Robert Bendyn, Sheriff of Devon
Nicholas de Cheyne (Cheney), Sheriff of Devon
John Inge, Sheriff of Devon.
Note
CFR 1319-27 p.59 is dated 1 June 1321, as the petition says. From the reference to three sheriffs refusing the petitioner entry, this petition would seem to date to c. 1324. Robert Bendyn was Sheriff of Devon between 12 October 1319 and 16 June 1321, Nicholas de Cheyne was Sheriff of Devon between 16 June 1321 and 30 November 1321, and John Inge was Sheriff of Devon between 30 November 1321 and 30 May 1322. The '5 days before last Easter' would seem to refer to 1322, and this petition would probably date to that year.
