Nature of request
The people of Cleveland state that although they never granted any ransom, truce or payment to Robert de Brus or to anyone else, John Gower of Sexhow and Adam de Raveneswath are distraining them to levy their share of a fine, for which they claim to have a commission from the King. The names of those aggrieved by this follow.
Nature of endorsement
Because the Sheriff of Yorkshire has been ordered that, when he has summoned before him the men of Cleveland whom he can establish assented to this fine being made, he is to compel them to contribute to payment of that fine, the Sheriff is to be ordered again that if [missing due to damage to ms] of the assent etc., they are not to be oppressed contrary [missing due to damage to ms] sent on this.
