Description
Petitioners
John de Caunteton (Canterton).
Name(s)
de Caunteton (Canterton), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged.] John de Caunteton states that the King's father ordained at Dunfermline that no man of Scotland would be disinherited, nor would any woman of Scotland lose her dower, by coming into the King's peace; and that on the same day John de Caunteton was granted the marriage of Alice, widow of Thomas de Soules, now his wife. However, her dower from her late husband's free tenement in Northumberland remains in the King's hand, and he has not been able to approach the King for it as he has been continually in his service. He asks that the dower might be delivered to his wife, and that he might have certain lands connected with this dower at farm.
Nature of endorsement
The King has granted that the petitioner's wife is to be endowed, and that she is to have two thirds of the lands etc. at farm only, paying as much annually for them at the King's Exchequer as the person who now holds them pays for those two thirds. And the Lieutenant of the King's Treasurer and the Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered by a writ under the great seal to give her a commission for the aforesaid two thirds.
Places mentioned

Scotland
Northumberland
Hoof (Heugh), Northumberland
Stamfordham, Northumberland.
People mentioned
[Edward I], King of England

Note
From the reference to the King's father's promise at Dunfermline, this would seem to be from the reign of Edward II, probably from the earlier part of that reign.
