Reference
SC 8/98/4853
Date
[1331]
Description
Petitioners
Elene verch Mereduk (Meredydd), daughter and heir of Wenthliane (Gwenllian) verch Mereduk (Meredydd).
Name(s)
verch Mereduk (Meredydd), Elene
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Elene verch Mereduk states that the King at her petition ordered an inquiry into her right to lands in Gwynfil which are of the inheritance of her mother. It has been returned in Chancery and she asks that it might be examined and [rest of petition missing].
Nature of endorsement
The inquisition is to be examined, and the Justiciar is to be ordered to inquire into the things contained in the petition, in the presence of the said Elene and the said Robert, if he wishes to be present; and the inquisition is to be returned in Chancery.
Places mentioned
Gwynfil, Cardiganshire, [Wales].
People mentioned
Wenthliane (Gwenllian) verch [Mereduk (Meredydd)]
Robert [Clement].
Note
The writ for the first inquisition in CIM 1307-49 no. 1292 is dated 17 July 5 Edward III (1331), and it was held on the morrow of the beheading of John the Baptist (30 August). This would seem to be the inquisition mentioned here. The writ for the second inquisition, which would seem to be the one ordered in response to this petition, is dated 24 October 1331, and the inquisition was held on the Thursday before St Philip and St James 6 Edward III (April 1332). CCR 1330-3 p.486 is dated 17 August 1332. This petition would therefore seem to be datable to 1331.
