Description
Petitioners
Master of the hospital of Burton Lazars.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Master of the hospital of Burton Lazars states that his predecessor was seised of some land in Carlton le Moorland, Lincolnshire, of which he was disseised by Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester, who gave it to his daughter Joan and to Duncan, Earl of Fife. After Duncan's death, Joan married Gervase Avenel of Scotland: because they adhered to the Scots, the King's father seized the lands into his hands, and gave them to Hugh le Despenser the son. After his death, they came into the hands of the present king, and were given into the keeping of Edmund de Grimmesby. He requests a remedy with regard to these lands.
Nature of endorsement
The Escheator is to be ordered to provide information in Chancery about the cause of the taking of these tenements into the King's hand, and what estate the Escheator has in the manor and in what manor it now is. And when the certification has been returned in Chancery, justice is further to be done.
