Description
Petitioners
? No Petitioner named
Nature of request
Writ of Edward III to the Sheriffs of London requesting information on why John Baynard, parson of the church of Colkirk, has been arrested and is being held in Newgate prison.
Nature of endorsement
Through the Bench. The John Baynard mentioned here has been captured and held in Newgate prison through a writ of the King, on information of the venerable father J, Archbishop of Canterbury, that he was excommunicated, whose transcript we send you, sewn to this writ; nevertheless a certain other writ has come to us, to deliver him, whose transcript we also send you. We have not released him because in the writ to capture him it is contained that he is excommunicated in a certain case of tithes, and in the other writ it is contained that a plea is pending between the lord King and master Henry de Iddesworth, Official of the Archbishop of Canterbury, concerning John's chattels and debts, which are not a matter of testimony or matrimony - as is more fully contained in the said writ - and he is held in prison for that reason and no other.
