Description
Petitioners
John Barry of Thurlstone and other tenants of the honour of Tickhill.
Name(s)
Barry, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly damaged and very hard to read] The petitioners state that a fine was levied in King Henry's court at the octave of the Purification in his sixth year, between Robert de Veupounte and Idonia his wife, demandants, and Alice, Countess of Eu, tenant, concerning the castle and town of Tickhill, with the result that Robert and Idonia released and quitclaimed all their right in the castle and honour, apart from six and a half knight's fees, which were separated from the honour of Tickhill, and never performed any services for it, until it came into the King's hand, and his bailiffs began to demand money from them, contrary to the terms of the fine. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He is to show the fine mentioned by the petition in Chancery and certain people are to be appointed there to inquire, in the presence of the Constable of Tickhill if the vills named in the petition were discharged of the rent after the fine had been levied, and for what time, and when, and by whom they were first charged with that rent, and into all the other circumstances touching this matter, and when the inquisition has been returned in Chancery, the King is to be informed.
