SC 8/97/4816
Date

Description
Petitioners
Mayor and community of Bristol.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Mayor and community of Bristol state that they have had view of frankpledge in Bristol and its suburb from time immemorial, and had petitioned the King to have this specifically included in their charter. The King ordered William de Shareshull and Robert Daston to hold an inquisition into this: this has now been returned in Chancery and has found that they have had this franchise as they said. They now ask that it might be put into their charter.
Nature of endorsement
The rolls of the last Eyre of Gloucestershire are to be searched, if it was after the statute of Quo Warranto; and if it is found that view of frankpledge was then claimed and allowed to them, they are to come to Chancery and have a charter for it, for a reasonable fine. And if there has been no Eyre since the said statute, they are still to have a charter as has been said above.
Places mentioned
Bristol
Gloucestershire.
People mentioned
William de Shareshull, justice
Robert Daston (Aston), justice.
Note
The inquisition mentioned by this petition was held on the Tuesday before the Annunciation, 5 Edward III [March 1331]. It would therefore seem to date from shortly after this, probably from the parliament of 1331.
