Nature of request
William Barbour of London, wax-chandler, and Richard Holand of London state that a year ago they became pledges and mainpernors before the Constable of the Tower of London for one John Kyme, soothsayer, who was imprisoned in the Tower at the command of King Richard, pledging themselves to have him before the present King and his council when required. They have continually had him before the council, but nothing has been required of him by the council to which he can answer, so that they can be discharged. They ask that John might be received to his response, or that it might otherwise be ordained for him, so that they might be discharged.
Nature of endorsement
Be it remembered that on 15 October in the third year etc., William Barbour, wax-chandler, and Richard Holand, named in the petition, brought John Kyme named in the petition before the King's council. When John had been examined about the reason why he was previously sent to the Tower of London, he swore on the gospels that henceforth he would have no trust in false prophecies, nor would he concern himself with them or with anything touching God's secrets, nor would he speak, privately or openly, anything that could sound against the King's estate. Whereupon it was decided by the council that John Kyme would go at large, and that William Barbour and Richard Holand, his pledges and mainpernors, would be discharged.Present: the Chancellor, the Bishop of Hereford, the Bishop of Worcester, the Keeper of the Privy Seal, J. Scarle, Prophete, J. Doreward and J. Frome.
