Date
[1280-1293]
Description
Petitioners
Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford.
Name(s)
de Bohun, Earl of Hereford, Humphrey
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford, makes two requests:1) He states that during the recent vacancy in the bishopric of St David's he had custody of the manor of Llanddew, part of the honour of Brecknock, as his ancestors had had in previous vacancies, and that he obeyed the King's commands firstly to deliver the manor to William de Plumpton, clerk, appointed to custody of the bishopric during the vacancy, and then to deliver the issues taken from it in the meantime to the new bishop. He asks that he might be given such respite in the matter of these commands that he might not be disinherited for his obedience.2) He states that during the vacancy the church of Llanfaes, to which he had the right of presentation, fell vacant, and that the King presented because of the vacancy and he brought a writ of darrein presentment. The assize on this writ is still pending before the justices, and he asks the King to order them to proceed to judgment.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first petition] It is to be seen in the Exchequer by whom etc.[On face, to second petition] The Bishop has appeared on this matter, and says that the Dean and Chapter have that church for their own use. Therefore, the Bishop, Dean and Chapter are to be heard.[On dorse] The Justiciar is to hear these trespasses and to report back to the King.
Places mentioned
Llanddew, [Breconshire, Wales]
St David's diocese
honour of Brecknock (Brecon), [Breconshire]
Llanfaes, [Breconshire, Wales].
People mentioned
William de Plumpton, clerk
Thomas de Bek, Bishop of St David's
Walter de Hopton, justice
Howell ab Meurick, justice.
Note
This petition must date from after Thomas Bek became Bishop of St David's in 1280, but the date of 1293 given by Petitions Relating to Wales pp.152-3 seems too late: by this time the matter has arisen again, because the bishopric is again vacant, but there is no mention in this petition of a new vacancy.
