SC 8/97/4802A
Date
[c. 1336]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Bekeryng (Beckering), formerly Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
Name(s)
de Bekeryng (Beckering), Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire
Nature of request
Thomas de Bekeryng, formerly Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, requests an allowance for £20 which he could not levy for his farm, because the King had granted Nottingham gaol to Thomas de Cophous, and he could receive no profit from it.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered by writ, containing the effect of this petition, that, when they have examined the rolls touching the accounts of the Sheriffs of the said county, if they can find from these rolls or by inquisition or in some other manner that the Sheriffs have always received the profits of the gaol in aid of their farm, and that Thomas de Cophous had the wardenship of the gaol by the King's commission at the time when Thomas de Bekeryng was Sheriff, and that Thomas de Bekeryng received none of the profits of the gaol, then they are to have him discharged of as much as the profit he was prevented from receiving from the gaol.
Places mentioned
Nottingham, Nottinghamshire.
People mentioned
Thomas de Cophous.
Note
Thomas de Bekeryng was Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire between 10 June 1335 and 24 March 1336, and the petition is likely to date from shortly after his period of office. CCR 1333-7 p.617 is dated 25 September 1336: the sum of money is the same, but the causes for the allowance seem to be quite different.
