Occupation

Nature of request
The petitioners state that although the King granted them £500 sterling in compensation for their costs and expenses in the suit against William de Saut, and ordered John de Sandale, Keeper of the Exchange in London, to pay this from the goods of William de Saut seized in England, they have received nothing except a deed for £115 17d. from the custom on wools. They request payment or assignment for the remainder.
Nature of endorsement
The King granted to these merchants, of his special grace, £500 of the goods of William de Saut in England then seized, which the same merchants said were worth 2000 marks and more; and from the same goods which will be found to have been in England at the time of the grant, and which clearly belonged to the said William and not to another: the King will fully give them the said grant, if they [the goods] suffice for this. And if they do not, the King does not understand that anything has been granted to them except insofar as the said goods suffice. However, the King will institute an inquiry into the said goods and how much they are worth, by the Constable of the Tower of London and John de Sandale, and if goods worth more than the £800 paid to Arnold de Caupena at the King's command are found, with which satisfaction can be given to them, the King will renew the whole grant; otherwise he will pay them as far as the said goods suffice. And on this a commission is to be made to Ralph de Sandwico and to John de Sandale, to inquire into the goods etc.
