Reference
SC 8/96/4789
Date
[1415-1421]
Description
Petitioners
Mayor and burgesses of Bristol.
Addressees
[John of Lancaster], Duke of Bedford and Guardian of England, and the lords of parliament.
Nature of request
The Mayor and burgesses of Bristol ask permission to build a common hall in the town to receive foreign cloth-merchants, and to hold a market once a week for them to sell their cloth, as is done in Blackwellhall in London, as the King is currently losing customs as a result of the secret selling of cloth by these people.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Bristol
Bakwelhall (Blackwellhall), London.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? 1421', presumably with reference to the Duke of Bedford as Guardian of England - but he also presided at the parliaments of November 1415, November 1417, and October 1419, so the petition has been tentatively dated to this range of dates.
