Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/96/4766A
Date
[1455-1456]
Description
Petitioners
William Burton, formerly Yeoman Usher of the Queen's Chamber, now Yeoman Usher of the Prince of Wales' Chamber.
Name(s)
Burton, William
Addressees
King.
Occupation
formerly Yeoman Usher of the Queen's Chamber, now Yeoman Usher of the Prince of Wales' Chamber
Nature of request
William Burton states that he was instrumental in recovering for the King a rent called the fee of Chokes, pertaining to Northampton castle, which had not been received since the third year of Edward III, and that as a reward, the King granted him 100s. a year from this rent for term of life. He is likely to lose this sum as a result of the act of resumption in the present parliament, and asks that he might be exempted from this act.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] It is to be put in respite and inquired into until etc.[On dorse] The Lords Spiritual and Temporal, in consideration of the fact that William Burton, by his labour and at his great expense, got into the King's hands, as he claims in the petition, the fee of Chokes in the counties of Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire to the annual value of £15, of which the King was not answered of a penny, as William also claims in his petition, have agreed that William should have the said fee, which yields £15 to the King annually, at farm if he wishes, retaining 100s annually and finding sufficient security that he will pay the King £10 annually: and if he will not take the fee at farm, the 100s are to be resumed into the King's hands.
Places mentioned
Northampton, [Northamptonshire]
Northamptonshire
Bedfordshire
Buckinghamshire
Lincolnshire
Leicestershire.
People mentioned
[Margaret of Anjou], Queen of England
[Edward of Lancaster], Prince of Wales
Edward III, King of England.
Note
This petition clearly concerns the same act of resumption as that of SC 8/96/4765: that of the parliament of 1455-1456. It was clearly presented earlier in the parliament than SC 8/96/4765, as its endorsement forms the basis for the new request made by that petition. The final grant, CPR 1452-61 p.288, is dated 9 March 1456.CPR 1452-61 p.76 is dated 5 June 1453, as the petition says. The exemption found in Rot. Parl. vol. V p.197b is from the parliament of 1449-1450, and would seem to be for an earlier grant to the petitioner.
