Description
Petitioners
John Banberye (Banbury) of Bristol.
Name(s)
Banberye (Banbury), John
Addressees
Commons of parliament.
Nature of request
John Banberye states that on the Friday after the Circumcision last, a ship belonging to him, returning to Bristol from Gascony with wines and other merchandises, ran aground on a sandbank in the Severn, and, when he and his men came to try to save the ship and its contents, they were prevented from doing so by people from Newport, Caerleon, Magor, The Pill, Nash, Pwllmeyric, Chepstow, Beachley, and other towns in Wales, who broke the ship up with hatchets and other instruments, and stole its contents and equipment. He requests a remedy, as he cannot have one at common law.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] Let the lords be spoken to.[On dorse] It is agreed and assented that the petitioner is to have a writ of oyer et terminer, and other commissions necessary to his case; and that he is also to have several letters of the privy seal to the lords in Wales in whose lordships the malefactors are living or repairing, to compel them in all the ways they can and as swiftly as they can, to make restitution or otherwise due satisfaction to the supplicant for his very great damages and losses specified in this bill.
