Date
[c. 1379]
Description
Petitioners
Peter de Bromous (Brumes) and William Mege, merchants.
Name(s)
de Bromous (Brumes); Mege, Peter; William
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
merchants
Nature of request
The petitioners, speaking for themselves and their companions, burgesses and merchants of Bordeaux and Libourne, request restitution of wines taken from them for the use of the King and others. An order was given in the last parliament that the King and others who received these wines were to pay for them and for two years' suit, but still received very little of this payment. They ask the King to order the Treasurer to pay the remainder of what he owes, and to order the Mayor of London to pay his share, and to make execution against the other defaulters. They also request restitution of the equipment and boat belonging to one of their cogs, which are currently at Rye and Hythe.
Nature of endorsement
The persons named within are to be compelled by all reasonable means, both by writ of the great seal and otherwise, to make due and swift restitution to the complainants for their wines or the value thereof. And with regard to what is due to them from the King, they are to sue to the said King's Treasurer.

Note
Dated on the guard to '? 1379' with reference to the List of Sheriffs and to CPR 1377-81 p.416 (18 July 1379) and p.422 (November 26 1379). However, these might seem to be from a later stage in the proceedings. This petition would seem more likely to be from 1377, as, like SC 8/95/4708, it mentions the instructions for payment in the last parliament, and the two years' suit at that point (which would accord with the dates of the Sheriffs and Mayor mentioned below). Unlike SC 8/95/4708, Alice Perrers is not mentioned. John Aubrey and John Fifhide were Sheriffs of London between Michaelmas 1373 and Michaelmas 1374. Adam de Bury served his second term as Mayor of London in this year.
