Thomas Brokhull, formerly Sheriff of Kent, states that because Canterbury castle, where the gaol of the county should be, is in a ruinous state, the Sheriffs have for some time used a house next to the castle as gaol; and that two years before last Christmas one Stephen Pillyng, kept in irons in that house for a debt he owed to Robert Abbot, executor of the testament of Henry Lyndraper, was rescued from there by an armed gang.
