Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/95/4729
Date
[1318-1327]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de la Berne.
Name(s)
Berne, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Robert de la Berne states that, while he was ill, a messenger came from the King, saying that he had sold his lands near Berkhamsted to the King, in exchange for their value or a pension; and, because he was ill, he could not deal with the matter himself at the time, but enfeoffed one Andrew de Kendale with the lands, for him to enfeoff the King with them. The King ordered that Robert be paid, but he has not been, as the Archbishop of Canterbury and Bishop of Ely can attest. He requests redress, as he has been kept out of his lands for 13 years, and is reduced to beggary.
Nature of endorsement
Coram domino rege. He is to come to Chancery and show the letter the King sent him, and the evidence he has for the agreement, and he is to inform the Chancellor in whose hands the land is, and of whose feoffment; and if necessary, the Archbishop and Bishop of Ely are to be ordered to explain what they know of the business. And if he finds that the King has the land, and that Robert was never paid the money, the Chancellor is to inform the King, for his conscience's sake.
Places mentioned
Berkhamsted, [Hertfordshire].
People mentioned
Hugh Trifle
Andrew de Kendale
William de Mountagu (Montagu), Steward of the King's household
Walter [Reynolds], Archbishop of Canterbury
John [Hotham], Bishop of Ely.
Note
William de Mountagu was Steward of the King's household between November 1316 and October 1318: as the petition makes it clear that he is no longer Steward, it would seem to date from after 1318 and before 1327. This fits the dates of the bishops mentioned: Walter Reynolds was Archbishop of Canterbury between 1314 and 1327, and John Hotham was Bishop of Ely between 1316 and 1337. The petition probably dates from c. 1324, as many of those in this file do (although at least one, SC 8/95/4733, can definitely be dated to 1322).
