Description
Petitioners
Francis Bache and Joan Bache his wife.
Name(s)
Bache; Bache, Francis; Joan
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Francis Bache and Joan his wife state that Robert de Bruys, father of the present Robert de Bruys, enfeoffed John de Lovetot and Joan, then his wife, with the manor of Writtle, for term of their two lives, and that they were peacefully seised of this manor until they were disseised by the present Robert de Bruys. Joan brought a writ of novel disseisin against him, but during her suit the manor was taken into the King's hand for his forfeiture. They request grace and a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. They are to come to Chancery and show the evidence she has for her claim, and a search is to be instituted for how the manor came into the King's hand, and for what reason; and the King is to be informed.
Places mentioned
Writtle, [Essex].
People mentioned
Robert de Bruys (Brus, Bruce), [Earl of Carrick]
Robert [I] de Bruys (Brus, Bruce), [King of Scotland]
John de Lovetot.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1324', probably for the same reason for which this date is advanced for several other petitions in this file: however, at least one (SC 8/95/4733) would seem to date to 1322. Bain's date of before July 1307 would seem to be too early for the hand and the French endorsement.
