Reference
SC 8/95/4723
Date
[? c. 1324]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Burton upon Trent.
Addressees
[Not specified].
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Burton-upon-Trent state that they have always been used to have three cartloads of dead wood a day from the wood of Needwood, by deeds of the Earls of Ferrers, in exchange for land, and that they are recently prevented from this by John le Forester, Keeper of Needwood. They request that the King either send letters to John to let them have their wood, or to give them an exchange in land or rent, or in several plots of land in his wood.
Nature of endorsement
They are to have a writ to the keeper etc. to allow the Abbot to have what he requests by his petition, as etc. from the time of the making of the charters etc.
Places mentioned
Burton upon Trent, [Staffordshire]
Needwood, [Staffordshire].
People mentioned
John le Forester, Keeper of Needwood.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1324', probably for the same reason for which this date is advanced for several other petitions in this file (although at least one, SC 8/95/4733, can be dated to 1322). In this case, however, the approximate date seems to be corroborated by SC 8/5/243, a similar petition which seems to date from 1322, and CCR 1323-7 pp.260-261, an order to John le Forester to allow the Prior of Tutbury to enjoy similar rights, dated 20 February 1325.
