Reference
SC 8/95/4701
Date
[1390]
Description
Petitioners
Joan Brenle, widow of Lawrence Brenle, knight.
Name(s)
Brenle, Joan
Addressees
King and council in parliament.
Nature of request
Joan, widow of Lawrence Brenle, knight, states that she is owed £200 by statute merchant, and that, although the terms of payment for this are past, William Venour, Mayor of London and John Parys, clerk, are refusing to inform Chancery of this recognisance, although she has often asked them to, but say that they have no rolls of such recognisances from the time of John de Norhampton, Mayor, when it was made; although previous certifications have been made from these rolls by Nicholas Exton, Mayor, and by John Parys. She asks that the Mayor might be brought before the council, and that a remedy might be ordained for her by the advice of justices and others learned in the law.
Nature of endorsement
The King wills it.
Places mentioned
Chalk, Kent.
People mentioned
Lawrence Brenle, knight
John de Norhampton (Northampton), Mayor of London
Helmyng Leger, clerk
William Venour, Mayor [of London]
John Parys (Paris), clerk
Nicholas Exton, Mayor of London.
Note
As William Venour appears to be the current Mayor of London at the time of the petition (it is hard to be absolutely sure, as the petition is damaged, but it appears to describe him as Mayor with no qualifications), this dates the petition to 1389-1390; it would probably have been presented to the parliament of January 1390. John de Northampton was Mayor for two years from 1381-1383, and Nicholas Exton from 1386-1388.
