Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/94/4685
Date
[1390-1395]
Description
Petitioners
William de Brien (Brian, Brienne), knight.
Name(s)
de Brien (Brian, Brienne), William
Addressees
King and the lords in this present parliament.
Nature of request
Brien requests an audience so that he is able to show the king the truth of the matter concerning the lands of Guy de Briene in England and Wales which he held for his life with remainder to the petitioner. While Brien was in the king's service Dewerose and Lovell estranged him from his inheritance, and Brien requests remedy so he can recover his right.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
People mentioned
Guy de Briene (Brian, Brienne)
John Dewcrose (Devereux), knight
John Lovell (Lovel), [Lord Lovel]
Note
The petition evidently relates to a dispute between William de Brien and Sir John Devereux (Steward of the Household and father-in-law of Philippa, daughter and co-heir of William's elder brother, Guy (d.1386)) concerning Philippa's inheritance, which included the barony of Laugharne in Carmarthenshire. Sir John requested and received a pardon for his part in an enfeoffment of this property without licence in 1388 (SC 8/268/13391, CPR 1385-9, p.500), and the petition presumably dates to some point between the death of William and Guy's father, also Guy, in 1390 and William's own death in 1395. It probably pre-dates Sir John Devereux's own death on 22 February 1393, but this is uncertain from the petition.
