Reference
SC 8/94/4678
Date
[c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
John of Gaunt, King of Castile and Duke of Lancaster.
Name(s)
Gaunt, King of Castile and Duke of Lancaster, John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Gaunt requests the restoration of the earldom of Richmond, or that he can have the same estate as he had in that earldom in what he was given instead so that he can repair them, as the costs of such repairs are outrageous.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Richmond, [North Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Edward III, King of England
[John de Montfort], Duke of Brittany.
Note
The petition dates to c. 1377 as it is clearly a petition presented to Richard II, the petition referring to the king's grandfather, and Gaunt's father. The earldom of Richmond was surrendered by Gaunt 25 June 1372, so that the petition dates to quite some time after the events detailed in the petition.
