vicar of East Dereham
Nature of request
Broun requests a remedy be ordained so that he can be released from imprisonment, men of the bishop of Ely having seized him from his house, and he is now imprisoned at Ely, and the bishop refuses to release him at mainprise.
Nature of endorsement
He should have a writ in Chancery to replevy his body.Concerning the other trespass he should sue at the common law.
Places mentioned
Rickinghall, [Suffolk]
East Dereham, [Norfolk]
Shipdham, [Norfolk]
Norwich diocese
Ely, [Cambridgeshire].
People mentioned
Archbishop of Canterbury
John [Hotham], Bishop of Ely
Bishop of Norwich.
Note
The date of the petition is difficult. The petition refers to the bishop of Ely as John. The petition is evidently from the first half of the fourteenth century, and is likely to be after 1322 as it is answered in French. Therefore it is likely that the petition refers to John Hotham, Bishop of Ely, and not his predecessor John Ketton. Hotham's pontificate ran from 1316 to 1337, so the petition has been dated to c. 1322-1337.
