Description
Petitioners
Philip Basadone, merchant of Venice.
Name(s)
Basadone, Philip
Addressees
King.
Occupation
merchant of Venice
Nature of request
Basadone states that he was assaulted whilst at Dover waiting to return home by Gibbe and others by procurement of Odyham and left for dead. He obtained an audience at Canterbury and the king ordered the mayor of Dover to arrest Gibbe and the others, but nothing was done, and as he came to St Albans for a further audience he was warned if he left his lodgings in London he would be killed. He requests that the chancellor be ordered to make a general writ for the taking and safe-keeping of Gibbe and the others so that that they can answer for the same, and he further requests an audience and remedy before the king leaves those parts.
Nature of endorsement
31 April [sic], regnal year 6, present in the council, the chancellor, treasurer, and the keeper of the Privy Seal, it was agreed that writs under the great seal be sent to Cornyssh, Gibbe and Odiham to be in person before the king in Chancery as soon as possible both to answer to the matter contained in the bill whereof they are to be examined at their coming, and to find surety to keep the peace towards the petitioner as the law demands.
Places mentioned
Venice, [Italy]
Dover, [Kent]
London
Canterbury, [Kent]
St Albans, [Hertfordshire].
People mentioned
Thomas Gibbe
Thomas Cornyssh
Robert Odyham (Odiham).
Note
The response to the petition gives the date of 31 April, regnal year 6, but does not specify the king. Given the uncertainty over a positive dating, the date range applied is a generous one incorporating possible dates between the sixth regnal years of Henry IV and Henry VI.
