Reference
SC 8/92/4556
Date
[1322-1323]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Berlay.
Name(s)
de Berlay, Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Berlay requests law and justice are done to him as he was forced by many grievances to grant his manor of Barlow to the earl for an annuity to be taken from the manor of Pickering, of which he was seised, but he is ousted by the king's ministers, the reversion coming into the king's hand by the earl's forfeiture.
Nature of endorsement
[None, the response is endorsed on SC 8/92/4557]
Places mentioned
Berlay (Barlow), [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Pickering, [North Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
[Thomas of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster.
Note
The petition probably dates to 1322 or shortly thereafter, as the petition complains about the actions of the earl of Lancaster after his forfeiture, and the petitioner has lost his annuity by the forfeiture. The petition cannot be any later than October 1323 as a close roll reference relating to this matter clearly shows Berlay to be dead, and his wife pursuing the matter (CCR 1323-7, p.28).
