Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/91/4547
Date
[c. 1302]
Description
Petitioners
Ellis de Berkeweye (Barkway), clerk.
Name(s)
de Berkeweye (Barkway), Ellis
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Berkeweye requests allowance for 2s. a day for his wages, and 2 robes a year for his fee as chancellor and treasurer of Ulster, sheriff of Carrickfergus and keeper of the crosses of Ulster. He has not been paid all the time he held the positions and has sued many times and had many writs to the justice of Ireland and the treasurer and barons of the Irish Exchequer, but they have done nothing.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered now as before that they should make execution of the previous orders of the king, or cause it to be signified why they are not able to do this.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France]
Ireland
Ulster, [Ireland]
Carrickfergus, [County Antrim, Northern Ireland].
People mentioned
Richard de Burgh, Earl of Ulster
Steven of [Fulburn], then Bishop of Waterford and treasurer of Ireland
John de Saunford, then escheator of Ireland.
Note
It is not clear on what basis Connolly dates the petition to c. 1305 as the evidence is only sketchy in the petition ('Irish Ancient Petitions', p.32). Richard de Burgh was a ward probably from 1271 to c. 1280, and Steven of Fulburn was bishop of Waterford to 1286, and the petition definitely records him as 'adonque', so it must be after 1286. The petition does refer to the petitioner doing 30 years service to the king which would date the petition to c. 1302, but whether the reference to this term of service can be considered precise is difficult to say, and may only mean a long time. However a date of c. 1302 will be used as a speculative dating.
