Description
Petitioners
Matilda de Bayuse (Bayouse), widow of Thomas de Bayuse of Somerset.
Name(s)
de Bayuse (Bayouse), Matilda
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Bayuse requests a writ to the justices of the Bench, before whom she has sued a writ of dower against Beche, that they proceed in the suit notwithstanding Beche's response that he could not answer without the king. Her late husband alienated a tenement in Toppesfield to Berwick, and after his death it came into the king's hand and the custody was given to Beche.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the justices of the Bench that, notwithstanding Beche's response, they should proceed in the plea of dower and do justice to the complainant. If any reasonable cause is underlying the delay then the king ought to be certified, otherwise they should proceed to the final discussion.
Places mentioned
Somerset
Toppesfield, [Essex].
People mentioned
William de la Beche
Thomas de Bayuse (Bayouse), late husband of the petitioner
John de Berwik (Berwick), clerk.
Note
The petition appears to date to the period 1310-1315 when Beche received a grant of the keeping, and a commitment during pleasure of the manor of Toppesfield in 1310-1312, and 1315 (CFR 1307-19, pp.241, 248). The guard notes appear to date this slightly later to 1319.
