Reference
SC 8/91/4523
Date
[c. 1318]
Description
Petitioners
Richard le Brette (Brett), valet.
Name(s)
Brette (Brett), Richard
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Brette states that the king granted him Dartmoor and it is destroyed by malefactors who are at the present parliament. If the king wishes to know more Courtenay will be able to certify him in the presence of the malefactors to his great profit.
Nature of endorsement
He should declare in Chancery in what kind the bailiwick is, and what kind of trespass was committed, and afterwards let what ought to be done for the king be done.
Places mentioned
Dartmoor, [Devon].
People mentioned
Hugh de Courteny (Courtenay).
Note
The petition possibly dates to 1318 when a commission was issued to Courtenay and others to arrest vagabonds in the king's forest of Dartmoor, though it seems likely that the commission may have preceded the petition, and Courtenay's knowledge of the trespasses stemmed from the commission (CPR 1317-21, p.298).
