Reference
SC 8/90/4482
Date
[1327-1332]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Betoyne (Bethune, Betoigne), citizen of London.
Name(s)
de Betoyne (Bethune, Betoigne), Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Betoyne states that he was falsely accused by Neubyggyng, by whom he was attached, and taken to Ravendale and held there unreasonably and against right. He was then bailed to Sturmy and [Chigwell], as appears by a letter delivered to John de Stonor, and Betoyne requests that the letter be returned to his mainpernors, and neither he nor the mainpernors [be further troubled].
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered by writ containing the effect of this petition to John de Stonor that he should search his rolls, and if he finds any such writing, he is to deliver it to Betoyne; and in the same manner let it be ordered to the keeper of the Great Wardrobe or others or masters ....
Places mentioned
London
Ravensdale, [Derbyshire].
People mentioned
Thomas de Neubyggyng (Newbiggin)
John Sturmy, knight
Hamo de [Chigwell]
John de Stonore (Stonor).
Note
The case between Bethune and Neubyggyng, taken from the plea roll for Hilary term 1324, appears in Parl. Writs, Vol. 2/2, Appendix, p.247, where Bethune states that he was taken prisoner by Neubyggyng on 9 November 1323. However, this petition clearly refers to the events taking place during the time of the father of the present King, and thus must date from the reign of Edward III, although probably not the parliament of 1327, as Bethune was mayor of London at that time and does not describe himself as such in the petition. It must also date to before the death of Hamo de Chigwell (Bethune's predecessor and successor as Mayor) in 1332.
