Commons of the vill of Appleby.

Nature of request
The commons request that their farm and the taxes that they pay be reduced because the town is much impoverished by pestilence and by competition by unlicenced markets called church markets (Kyrkmarkethes) where the goods that ought to be sold in the town are forestalled.
Nature of endorsement
All the markets called kirkemarkettys and other markets whatsoever in prejudice of their market and without the king's authority are to be ended.

The petition dates to 1380 when a commission of oyer and terminer, an inquisition and a grant all relating to this matter were issued (CPR 1377-81, pp.520, 565-6; CIM 1377-89, no.125).
