SC 8/90/4464
Date
[1305]
Description
Petitioners
Rector and brethren of Ashridge.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The rector and brethren request that the king will vouch to warranty for land and rent in Hemel Hempstead which Cheyndut is claiming as dower from them before the justices. The rector has answered that the land was once the earl of Cornwall's, who enfeoffed an earlier rector, and that the king as heir to the earl ought to warrant this. The earl gave to Cheyndut's late husband the manor of Barford in exchange for the land at Hemel Hempstead.1)
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.2) He is to sue before Hengham and his colleagues. And justice is to be done by way of voucher to warranty, so that the king warrant according to the terms of the feoffment, and he is to vouch further to warranty etc. There is to be a writ of Chancery on this to the justices that they are to proceed.
Places mentioned
Ashridge, [Hertfordshire]
Hemel Hempstead, [Hertfordshire]
Barford, Wiltshire.
People mentioned
Eleanor [Cheynduth (Cheyndut)], widow of William Cheyndut
Ralph de Hengham, justice of the Bench
Edmund [of Almaine], Earl of Cornwall.
Note
The petition clearly dates to the period 1301-1307 as it refers to the activities of the late earl of Cornwall who died in September 1300, and is before the end of the reign of Edward I. But the petition probably dates to 1305 as a Latin summary of a counter petition by the rector was enrolled on the parliament roll of Spring 1305 (Memoranda de Parliamento, p. 85 (no. 141)).
