Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/90/4453
Date
[1305]
Description
Petitioners
John de Strathbogie, Earl of Atholl.
Name(s)
de Strathbogie, Earl of Atholl, John
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Lesnes, [Kent]
Nature of request
The earl requests that he can have seisin of his lands of Lesnes according to the purport of an inquest made by the escheator, since the king has already granted him that he can have his English and Scottish lands.
Nature of endorsement
Coram Rege. 2) It is ordered by writ of Chancery to the treasurer that he should compensate the queen, and when the earl has come and made homage he should deliver the land of Losires to him.
Note
The petition cannot be later than 1306 as Strathbogie forfeited his lands and was executed on 7 November 1306 (Handbook of British Chronology, p.501). Bain dates the petition to 1305, though a writ to the bishop of Chester to consider the claims of the earl which one might have thought predated the petition is dated 19 January 1304 (Bain, vol. II, no.1682, no. 1440). The date seems to be confirmed by a fine roll entry whereby the escheator is ordered to deliver the manor to the earl on 2 August 1305 (CFR 1272-1307, p.524).
