SC 8/89/4450
Date
[c. 1330]
Description
Petitioners
Eynon (Einion) ap Gwilym.
Name(s)
ap Gwilym, Eynon (Einion)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Eynoun ap Gwilym states that his great-grandfather, whose heir he is, leased half the commote of Is Coed (otherwise Is Coed Is-Hirwern or Coedmor) to Roger de Mortimer of the New House for term of life, and that after Roger's death, his son and heir entered, and to bar William's heirs from their inheritance, leased the tenements in mortgage to Hugh de Cressingham; after Hugh's death, they came into the King's hand, because he was Treasurer of Carmarthen. He sued on this matter in the time of the King's father, and had a writ of inquiry, but Roger de Mortimer, who then became Justiciar of Wales, refused to do justice, and delivered the tenements to a Roger de Mortimer, his kinsman, without process of law. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The Justiciar of South Wales is to be ordered to inquire into the contents of this petition, and to inform the King in his Chancery; and justice is to be done to him there.

Note
Petitions Relating to Wales p.134 dates this petition to '? c. 1317-21', interpreting it as an appeal against Roger de Mortimer of Chirk's grant of the commote to his nephew, Roger de Mortimer of Wigmore, during his second period of office as Justiciar of Wales in 1317-1322. However, it mis-identifies the Roger de Mortimer who was the beneficiary of the original grant: the grant of Iscoed was in fact made to Roger Mortimer of West Wales, son of Henry Mortimer. His grandson, Roger Mortimer of West Wales, son of Llywelyn Mortimer, recovered the lands in 1329 (CPR 1327-30 p.436). Petitions Relating to Wales further identifies the Eynon who appealed against this grant as an Eynon ab Ieuan, and reads 'ab Ieuan' to accommodate this: but the petition clearly says 'Eynon ap Gwilym'. Either the name has been miscopied or, as seems likely, the petitioner is the Eynon ap Gwilym ab Eynon who in 1335 received a plot of land in this commote at rent for his service in Scotland (CFR 1327-37 p.433). All this suggests a date for this petition of c. 1330, after the fall of Roger Mortimer, Earl of March, who was Justiciar of Wales from 1327 (CFR 1327-37 p.19).
