Name(s)

Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Richard Aldred of Ripon, Richard Barry and Nicholas Byndlowys state that two years ago, when the Scots came to Ripon and threatened to burn it down, the people of the town promised a ransom of 1000 marks to save their town, of which they paid 240 marks, and the petitioners and three others, who later escaped, were taken as hostages for the payment of this sum. However, they have not collected any more of this ransom. The petitioners were released by the Scots, leaving their wives and children in their place, and came to the King to request a remedy. The King ordered an inquisition, which has found that it is as they say. They ask for execution of this money, as it is found by the inquisition that all the people of Ripon ought to contribute to it.
