Reference
SC 8/89/4431
Date
[? c. 1422]
Description
Petitioners
Joan Aspall, widow of Thomas Aspall, esquire.
Name(s)
Aspall, Joan
Addressees
[Humphrey of Lancaster], Duke of Gloucester, Protector of England, and the lords of parliament.
Nature of request
Joan, widow of Thomas Aspall, states that although Richard Veer, formerly Earl of Oxford, enfeoffed three men with certain tenements, with the intention that they should pay his debts, his widow and executrix takes the profits of these tenements. The petitioner has long sued to the countess for restitution of a debt, but without success. She asks that the Countess, Nicholas Thorley, her new husband, Thomas Rolf and Walter [Burgate] might be ordered to appear before the Duke and lords to show why she has not had restitution; and that she might have a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Thomas Rolf is to be ordered to appear before the lords of parliament and answer to this petition.
People mentioned
[Humphrey of Lancaster], Duke of Gloucester, Thomas Aspall, esquire
Richard Veer (de Vere), Earl of Oxford
John Heende
Thomas Rolf
Walter Burgate
[Alice de Vere], Countess of Oxford
Nicholas Thorley.
Note
Richard de Vere, Earl of Oxford, died in 1417. From the address, this petition is probably from the early years of the reign of Henry VI. The mention of Nicholas Thorley, whom the Countess of Oxford married before 13 October 1421, would suggest a date of or after 1422.
